Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has transformed how Generation Z accesses and understands religious information, including hadith. TikTok and Instagram have become popular platforms for consuming religious content due to their accessibility, interactivity, and practical format. This study aims to examine Generation Z's perceptions of hadith authority in the era of TikTok and Instagram and to identify the factors influencing their acceptance of hadith-related content on social media. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the research involved interviews with 24 undergraduate students of Hadith Studies who belong to Generation Z and actively use TikTok and Instagram. Data were analyzed using a digital socio-religious perspective to explore the relationship between digital culture and the interpretation of hadith. The findings reveal that social media has become one of the primary sources of religious learning for Generation Z. Most participants viewed hadith content on social media positively, considering it beneficial for expanding religious knowledge and providing daily spiritual motivation. However, many participants rarely verified the authenticity of the hadith they encountered online. Furthermore, the popularity of religious influencers and their communication styles significantly shaped perceptions of religious authority in digital spaces. The study also highlights the ambivalent impact of social media on hadith authority: while it facilitates the dissemination of hadith knowledge, it also increases the risk of spreading unverified information. Therefore, strengthening hadith literacy and digital religious literacy is essential to enable Generation Z to critically, responsibly, and effectively engage with hadith content in the digital age.
