Abstract

The Qur’an, as the divine speech of Allah SWT, possesses unparalleled linguistic beauty and rhetorical power, vividly exemplified in Surah ar-Raḥmān. One of the most striking stylistic features of this chapter is the recurrent verse “Fabiayyi Ālāi Rabbikumā Tukadzdzibān” (“Which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?”), repeated 31 times throughout the surah. This repetition serves not merely as a stylistic ornamentation, but as a profound theological assertion that continuously reminds both humans and jinn of the abundant divine blessings they often overlook. This study aims to examine the meaning and function of this repetitive verse through Ferdinand de Saussure’s structural semiotic approach, which conceptualizes language as a system of signs composed of the signifier (signifiant) and the signified (signifié). Through this analytical lens, the study reveals that the repeated verse establishes a symbolic relational pattern between the Creator (Khāliq) and His creation (makhlūq), operating simultaneously as a rhetorical device and a spiritual awakening. The verse’s rhythmic recurrence constructs layers of meaning that emphasize divine generosity, human accountability, and the harmony between linguistic structure and Qur’anic spiritual intent. The findings highlight that the semiotic structure of repetition in Surah ar-Raḥmān enriches the interpretive depth of the text, offering new insights into how linguistic form reinforces theological meaning. This research contributes to contemporary linguistic tafsīr studies by demonstrating how modern semiotic theory can illuminate the intricate interplay between language and revelation, fostering deeper appreciation for the Qur’an’s inimitable literary and spiritual dimensions.
